3rd Goal: A 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes gender equality and women empowerment, by encouraging both males and females of varied age ranges, starting with grade school, to pursue studies in fields related to STEM, preferably “STEAM”. But, what exactly is “STEAM”? Because of certain reliability factors of the American economy, innovation, once again, captures the interests of American economists to secure a successful and prosperous future for the great nation of the US of A.

Yet innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.

We need to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.

STEM + Art = STEAM

STEAM is a movement championed by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals.

The objectives of the STEAM movement are to:

  • transform research policy to place Art + Design at the center of STEM
  • encourage integration of Art + Design in K–20 education
  • influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation

STEAM in Every Student Succeeds Act Signed by President Obama
by Board President - Wednesday, 22 March 2017, 11:16 AM

” — President Obama signs the Every Student Succeeds Act, a bipartisan bill that …

More good news late last week for the fate of education offered through US schools – and with it a renewed emphasis on the value of studying art as a necessary and important component to advancing understanding in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, math). Since 2010 RISD has been at the forefront of advocating for STEAM as a more relevant and valuable approach to education at all levels.

After the House voted in favor of the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) – which supersedes No Child Left Behind – the Senate passed the bill as well and on Thursday President Obama signed it into law, proclaiming it “an early holiday gift” and “a Christmas miracle” that Congress finally agreed on a significant piece of bipartisan legislation.

Before the president speaks about the significance of the new law in this video, he’s introduced by a boy name Antonio who says he wants be an engineer and loves science and math. But then he points out that his school “has opened new possibilities [for him] because it’s an art-focused school… art is integrated into all subjects.”

“The reauthorization of No Child Left Behind as the Every Student Succeeds Act is a major victory for our public schools and, in particular, for arts education in the US,” notes President Rosanne Somerson 76 ID. “At RISD we believe that the only way to tackle the critical challenges of today’s world is through a well-rounded approach to thinking, learning and problem-solving that integrates creativity, inventiveness and a diversity of perspectives. Thanks to the inclusion of STEAM in this bill – something championed and led by RISD and the dedicated members of the Congressional STEAM Caucus – I expect that ESSA will help accomplish this for America’s schools.”
